The interior of the circa-1873 former Edenhope Reception Centre at 80 Maribyrnong Rd, Moonee Ponds has been transformed by a builder with a “passion for the era of yesteryear” and has just been listed at a level that would elevate it among the suburb’s priciest pads.

Beyond the elegant facade of the dazzling property is an enormous elaborate floorplan and a mountain of extravagant features.

They include a private library, hand cut mosaics, Calacatta gold marble floors, Michelangelo-inspired 5.5m-high handpainted ceilings, European chandeliers and a first-class kitchen with a butler’s pantry.

The staggering $6-$6.6 million price range would make it the second most expensive house in Moonee Ponds if it sells in that bracket, according to CoreLogic.

RT Edgar Brighton agent Steve Koutsantonis said the current owner bought and meticulously restored the former wedding reception venue about 10 or 11 years ago.

“The property was restored as part of his love and passion for the era,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“The detail of the artwork on the ceiling is phenomenal, and the Calacatta gold marble floors are beautiful.

“Given the type of property that it is, it would be ideal for somebody who wants to be in proximity to the city, and wants to make a statement.”

Inside the mansion are five bedrooms with one inside a former marriage chapel. The main has its own private wing with walk-in wardrobes, ensuite with a marble bath and stairs to a turret.

At the centre is the formal living and dining room surrounded by a long gallery, ballroom with a corner bar and the kitchen.

“I wish I had a crystal ball to answer (whether the interiors would be protected),” Koutsantonis said.

“But somebody buying a property like this would want it for the way it is, the way it’s been restored, and for all of its features.

“We launched a few days ago, and there has been a significant amount of interest.

“So only time will tell.”

The property has been on the market multiple times since 2013, and had a $7 million price tag in 2015, but failed to attract a buyer and last sold for $2.3 million in 2005, according to CoreLogic.

“It’s time (for the vendor) to move on to the next project,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“I’m not sure what will come next but, with his creativity, I’m pretty sure they’ll endeavour to do something exciting and innovative.”

The house price record in Moonee Ponds is held by 36 Ardmillan Rd, which sold for $10.725 million in February 2018.
