NAMIBIA'S economy has always been vulnerable to shock waves from global events such as pandemics, de-globalisation, commodity price volatility and geopolitical tensions.

AWARD-WINNING artist, writer, film producer and director Micheal Kahorongo, also known as Micheal Pulse, has been faced with many obstacles over the years, but has kept moving towards achieving his dreams.

Kahorongo says he loves storytelling through music and film.

The artist recently added being a film director to his list of achievements.

He says he just finished a short film, which was part of the '321' project in collaboration with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).

He says he is currently busy shooting a film with MultiChoice Namibia and NBC.

Kahorongo says he started his career in theatre and later wrote his first play.

“The director of 'The Third Will' came to watch the show, and the next day offered me a job as Season 3 writer, which led me to writing 'The White Line', which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

“I make a living from this industry, and more so in film,” he says.

As a filmmaker, Kahorongo likes telling stories about Namibia.

He says it is a diverse country with a huge history and rich cultures, which should be shared with the world.

Raised at a small village called Otumoboronga, some 30km away from Okakarara, Kahorongo says his greatest motivation to keep going was his mother.

“Just seeing how hard she worked to raise four boys, she really inspired me.

“Growing up, the best advice I have received was to keep moving, no matter what the circumstances are. This has shaped me into the adult I am today,” he says.

Kahorongo says his music career started in 2011.

“Music was always a constant in my life. Singing at the first 'Song Night' as the first act hurled me into being a professional artist.

“Two albums later I am still going strong. Becoming a commercial artist was accidental.

“My former manager, Zindri Swartz, released a song I had done for a dance theatre piece for radio, and the song, 'Oval Heart', became my first hit,” he says.

Albums under Kahorongo's belt thus far include 'Pulsified' and 'Breathe'.

He says of all his songs 'Lost' has touched him the most.

Kahorongo says he is currently working on a new album, called 'Portraits', which is a reflection of who he is.

“The public can expect songs of love, life and hope,” he says.

Over the years, Kahorongo has won many awards, he says.

“I have a lot of milestones I have achieved, but the few I want to mention are winning best RnB at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs), and being nominated at Afrimas in 2017.

“Making 'The White Line', I won best scriptwriter in 2019, and in the same year I was nominated for best RnB at the NAMAs. My highlight has to be that 'The White Line' was considered for nomination at the Oscars and Golden Globes,” he says.

Kahorongo urges others to work hard consistently, and to embrace every opportunity they can to get where they want to be.

“Never give up on yourself. Dream big. If your dream does not scare you, it is not big enough.”
