Blue cabinetry’s a “thing?” We’re seeing the sultry hue in kitchens everywhere, from the palest turquoise to deep indigo. In Kathryn and Matt Purselle’s remodeled Decatur kitchen, Terracotta Design Build’s Nicole Jui picked classic elements like Shaker-style cabinetry and marble countertops to fit the 1930s house—but added a jolt of blue for fun.

Clear Charm “The seeded glass cabinet doors keep with the period of the home,” Jui says. “They also allow the upper cabinets to feel lighter, for a room with no windows.”

Warm Ways The Purselles wanted to incorporate wood from a family farm and did so here as a thin, horizontal shelf that plays off the rich wood floors.

Range of Motion As a focal point, this right-sized stainless-steel range and hood do the job.

Seamless White Honed Statuarietto marble provides the beauty of stone countertops, but inexpensive white subway tiles continue the clean look up the backsplash wall.

Keeping it Teal Sherwin-Williams “Tempe Star” in a satin finish is an unexpected, modern take on blue, says the designer.

Dapper Details The cabinetry hardware has a great weight and feel, complementing the elegant marble.

Tip Custom cabinets allowed the team to create hidden functions, such as knife storage, an electronics-charging station, household files, and a step-stool cabinet, although the homeowners love displaying some of their kitchen items on the pot rack rail for the look of a real cook’s kitchen.
