Marble and modern mix in this Portland mansion
From the street, a sleek, two-story Portland Height house showcases dramatic matte black walls fronted by towering vertical cedar boxes. Interrupting the rectangular mass are tall windows that offer no clue to what’s inside.
Open the front door concealed by stone walls, however, to find a structure full of surprises: A gold-leaf ceiling and Venetian plaster walls mixed with brass banisters and crocodile-textured wallpaper.
“The furnishings can be minimalist or moody,” says Elliott Moore of Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, who listed the custom house on 0.69 acres at 2808 Southwest Patton Lane for sale at $2,799,999.
Moore compares the meld of classic and modern — like crystal chandeliers and leather-wrapped fixtures — to the mod-glam style championed by Los Angeles designer Kelly Wearstler, whose colorful, playfully curated pastiche interiors are theatrical and widely admired.
Wearstler, the fashionable judge on Bravo’s “Top Design” competition, wrote in her fourth book, “Rhapsody,” that mashing antiques, vintage and contemporary furnishings and art leads to a more “soulful” interior.
Spaces in the Portland Heights home share Wearstler’s bold approach to merging textures and time periods.
Here, surfaces covered in Italian marble go beyond stair steps. The same white marble with dark veins clads kitchen counter tops, the island’s top and sides, as well as backsplash areas, range hood and the sink in the butler’s pantry. The primary suite has a bathroom marble vanity and tub walls.
Step out a glass back door to a covered patio with a white marble floor and treetop views.
The house, built in 2011, has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room and 4,350 square feet of living space, which includes guest quarters with a private entry.
The workshop, attached to the six-car garage, could be converted into a home theater, says Moore.
