A six-bedroom, 8,000-square-foot mansion in Lincoln Park sold on Wednesday for $12.55 million — making it the Chicago area’s highest residential selling price of 2021.
Wednesday’s sale price of Andrew and Sandy Killion’s mansion on North Burling Street just barely edged out the $12.5 million off-market sale early in 2021 of a mansion that is just a block to the east. Andrew Killion co-founded proprietary trading firm Akuna Capital, while Sandy Killion is a decorator.
In Lincoln Park, the Killions in 2018 paid $11.9 million through a land trust for their mansion. However, they now have decided to return to their native Australia, listing agent Debra Dobbs of @properties told Elite Street. The Killions listed the mansion in May for $15 million, and never budged on their asking price.
Built by homebuilder BGD&C in 2012, the mansion has seven bathrooms, two fireplaces, oversize windows, French doors, a walnut-paneled study, a butler’s pantry, a kitchen with a breakfast bar that seats five, and a primary bedroom suite with a his-and-hers walk-in closet area and a bathroom that features Calacatta marble. On the lower level are a guest suite, a recreation room, a fitness studio, a gift wrap room and an office.
The mansion sits on a 90-foot-wide, 0.27-acre lot — which is almost unheard-of in Chicago — and has a large elevated terrace, a separate paved area and a paved basketball court.
“I met Sandy and Andrew in 2008, when they were relocating from Australia, and they became dear friends, and they have absolutely loved living in Chicago,” Dobbs told Elite Street. “They wanted me to say that they absolutely loved Chicago and loved their home and loved the Bulls. When Sandy and Andrew bought the house, they completely reinvented the home to be neutral. It had been dark and heavy, and the whole house is about light and airiness and bringing the outdoors in. It was a really happy home.”
Public records do not yet identify the buyer.
The mansion had a $108,825.30 property tax bill in the 2020 tax year.
An earlier version of this story misstated the 2020 property tax bill associated with this property.
