When this Los Feliz home recently popped up for sale, the renovated 1930s English Tudor generated plenty of buzz for its sophisticated interiors, which incorporate a highly curated array of bespoke finishes — Calacatta viola marble, hand-finished limewash walls, House of Hackney wallpaper — mixed with original architectural details. Buyers swooned over the property, and it quickly sold for $4.6 million, the full asking price.

Records indicate the buyer is prominent hairdresser Kristin Ess, likewise renowned for her bespoke tresses treatments for famous clients such as Lucy Hale, Jenna Dewan and Lauren Conrad. While she’s not quite a household name, Ess’ celebrity profile has risen sharply since 2017, when she launched an eponymous line of haircare products at Target. That line has blown past sales expectations every year since its launch and made Ess a bonafide beauty mogul, with a brand that has now topped $100 million in revenue.

And ever the savvy marketer, Ess has already set up an Instagram account for her photogenic new home, which is now known simply as The Esstate — get it?

Designer Jordan Bakva bought the property in 2020 for $2.4 million, and he set about renovating every inch of the home in a sultry style divergent from the typical white-washing that historic Los Angeles homes often suffer.

Tucked behind gates and trees, the nearly 4,000-square-foot home flaunts a fireplace-equipped living room and a Pinterest-ready kitchen with an imported La Cornue range. There’s also an original wood-paneled library with its own fireplace and four bedrooms, each including their own full bathroom.

Outside, romance is the yard’s central theme, with a newly-installed oval swimming pool reminiscent of Old Hollywood, multiple “hidden” lounge and al fresco dining spaces and meandering pathways that wrap around the property. Also on tap is a detached one-bed, one-bath guesthouse with its own stainless appliance-equipped kitchen and spacious living areas.
