New York’s Long Island splits in two as it pushes east into the Atlantic Ocean. The North Fork is the quieter, more laid-back, and not quite so insanely expensive counterpart to the South Fork, a.k.a. the Hamptons. Indeed, some old timers even refer to the North Fork as the Unhamptons. Here, vineyards, old family farms, and horse estates surround small towns filled with quaint inns, chic restaurants and picturesque Victorian houses.

East Marion, the rural hamlet where this compound is located, is known for its lavender fields, which have become an enormous tourist attraction among Asian tourists, its water-lined causeway, and plethora of cute B&Bs. However, there isn’t much cute or quaint about these simply appointed old buildings that have been painted a trendy flat black. Instead, it’s all about new-fashioned barn style embellished with luxury materials and rugged industrial touches. Asking $2.15 million, the 2.26-acre property is available via M. Monica Novo at Douglas Elliman.

The new owners should be seeking serenity and appreciate seclusion, though, as the spacious property is at the end of a private road with protected farmland to the east, a protected water reserve to the north, and a protected golf course to the west. One neighbor and tons of quiet is all they’ll ever have.

The 3,400-square-foot main house offers three bedrooms and three baths, but a cavernous mezzanine should be able to sleep half a dozen more weekend guests. There’s also a private office that could be made into a guest room. Updated bathrooms include heated marble floors, a wet room, and vintage style fixtures.

Primed for entertaining, with a dry bar, full-size refrigerator and a 172-bottle wine fridge with two cooling zones — one for whites, the other for reds — the great room is cavernous, with a 24-foot ceiling, 20-foot cupola and pale wood floors. The separate eat-in kitchen is really and truly a chef’s kitchen, as the sellers are legendary New York City and East End restaurateurs Frank DeCarlo and Dulcinea Benson, who own Barba Bianco, in the charming neighboring village of Greenport, and Bacaro, a neighborhood staple on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The kitchen boasts both black Nero Marquina and white Carrara marble counters, a custom island with integrated snack bar, and a dual-fuel range below a custom-made hood.

The detached three-car garage offers loads of extra space. In addition to a 1,200 square foot second floor that’s ripe for improvements, there’s a walkout basement with a full bath and a bonus room with closets.

Outside, a cedar deck overlooks the large property and the swimming pool surrounded by thick carpets of lawn. There’s also a vegetable garden, an outdoor shower, a fire pit, and stone walls, as well as plenty of space for a tennis court.

Note to the next owner: Don’t forget to toss some local lavender in the bath. Serenity now!
