The clients for this project wanted their existing study to be converted into a room that could be used to display their wine collection, make cocktails and play games. They desired the feel of an upscale art deco speakeasy that also kept the traditional architectural details of the space intact.

Gina D’Amore Bauerle chose a black and white color palette for the room, and used gold accents to add an opulent feel. Existing ceiling coffers and millwork from the study were preserved and painted black to blend in with the finish of the new wine storage cabinetry from Abacus Cabinetry. Pearlescent Kravet wallpaper was also installed in the ceiling grid between the beams to add in some intricate details and metallics.

The main wall in the wine room features two independently regulated sections for wine display, with floating wine racks from VintageView that stack bottles horizontally, while additional drawers beneath offer alternative storage. The middle section of the wall features two large pocket doors that conceal a hidden liquor area. Interior shelves from Element Designs are trimmed in gold, and cabinet hardware from Buster + Punch and Nest Studio also feature a gold finish. A Calacatta Vincenze countertop from MSI offers space for mixing drinks.

Viviano Marmo marble tile around the fireplace enhanced the room’s art deco feel. Above the fireplace sits an ironic wall sculpture of a brass cast fictional rabbit wearing human accessories. The piece inspired a display of art with equally humorous animals wearing human clothing that are framed in such a way that they look like a serious art collection.
